David Broman teaches how to perform liveness analysis using control-flow graphs and construct interference graphs for register allocation.

In this video, I give a basic tutorial on performing liveness analysis of a simple function using a control-flow graph. Specifically, I describe how to do this using data-flow analysis and fixed-point iteration. At the end of the video, I briefly describe how to use the flow information to construct an interference graph. This is the first of two videos that describe the general idea of register allocation. Please check out the whole playlist with different short videos related to compilers and programming languages. What people say. Recommended as a great tutorial on the propagating nature of live range analysis in compilers.

On “After doing it the regular way, I tried creating a proof of concept *reverse* linear scan register allocator”

Hi Teln, \- handling branches gets more difficult, and from what I see, some sort of live range analysis is still required (defeating the promise of RLSRA to avoid having to compute live ranges). Yes, [video is a great little tutorial showing the propagating nature of live range analysis. Which is required for branches Tree Register Allocation \Hongbo Rong's 2009\ https://www.researchgate.net/publication/221005395\_Tree\_register\_allocation is an absolute must read for register allocation - It shows how Local, Hack/SSA, and linear scan are in fact related and presents a generalized allocation subsuming them. Within that paper (and in linear scan) it notes the fix-up stage required to…

Liveness analysis on SSA how to do liveness analysis on SSA IR? I came across this link to this video but the author doesn't mention SSA. Will this work for SSA too? If yes, then I don't get how the algorithm handles phi node.
