Brent Ozar explains how database engines read pages, execute queries, and generate query plans to help developers write better SQL.

You’re a developer or a DBA comfortable writing queries to get the data you need. You’re much less comfortable understanding query plans. Learn more: brentozar.com/training/think-like-sql-server-engine/

What people say. Recommended as an engaging and foundational explanation of database engine internals that translates well across different relational databases.

So, I know this has a MySQL tag, but I was an Oracle DBA as well as well as sql server and this helped me with both platforms. I’d highly encourage watching this video for a foundation. It’s a fun hour of watching Brent explain how the engine works. It’s VERY similar (blocks vs pages). link to this video This will give you a good idea of what things to look for, and translates very well to other RDBMS. Give it a shot and see how you like it.

>link to this video I've watched this before and I really like it. But then let me ask you, given an SQL query, (a) What is your framework in optimizing it? (b) What happens when there are many concurrent deletes/updates happening on this hot table? (c) What if this select query returns 300ms, but then there are 30,000 of them happening per second?
