This tutorial shows how to configure an Arduino as an ISP programmer to program bare ATmega microcontrollers.

ATMEGA8, ATMEGA48, ATMEGA88, ATMEGA168, and ATMEGA328P programming using Arduino. How to make an Arduino as an ISP Programmer. This video tutorial contains instructions on programming an AVR Microcontroller and an Arduino-to-Atmega8 wiring diagram for Atmega8 programming. How do you program an ATMEL AVR microcontroller for sequential LED blinking, making a digital clock, making a home automation system, etc.? ------------------------------------ Code, ATmega8 wiring diagram with Arduino, 4 LED blinking schematic circuit diagram using ATmega8, ATmega48, ATmega88, ATmega168, and ATmega328P. What people say. Recommended as a cheap way to program bare AVR chips without buying a dedicated commercial programmer.

On “PCB design with a microcontroller”

USB isn't necessary. And in fact it won't work unless the chip has already been programmed with a bootloader. The Arduino boards you buy already have a bootloader programmed by the manufacturer, but a new bare chip won't. To program the chip you would typically use a dedicated programmer. A lot of times you would just buy a commercial program/debug tool like the Atmel ICE, but on the cheap you can use a spare Arduino with the Arduino as ISP sketch as a programmer. link to this video

…maybe AVR-dude. I don't really remember - all I know I was using an STK-200 ISP interface and the parallel port. I have no parallel port on my PC and I see now the go to ISP tool is USBasp and I have ordered one of those, should arrive in a few weeks. While I am waiting for its delivery, can I program an Arduino Uno as a USBasp? I found this YT [video but this implies I need to change the ATMEGA8s bootloader as well - I presume I don't need to program the bootloader providing I don't need use the Arduino tool and stick to using avr-dude or avr-studio configured for the serial port the USB com port on the arduino provides. On a more sobering note, damn I wish i took more care and made "p…
