Arash Khatami introduces his series on building a C++ game engine from scratch, starting with the design and setup of the editor.

PLEASE READ PINNED COMMENT. In this very first episode of the game engine programming series, I give an introduction to my plan for writing a game engine from scratch and start coding for the game editor. What people say. Highly recommended by game engine developers as an exceptionally detailed and comprehensive guide to building an engine and editor.

On “Opinion on TheCherno's Game Engine Series?”

I have followed it and it is exceptionally beginner friendly. He sticks to using OpenGL which is a fairly simple graphics API to use and lays out a fairly good way of structuring a multiplatform game engine. He is also entertaining to watch which certainly makes watching and learning from the series easier and more enjoyable. However, it is quite slow and not yet mature. I have found that The Game Engine Programming series is a bit quicker and is a lot more complete currently. It is a little less beginner friendly, mostly due to D3D12 use instead of d3d11/OpenGL. But it is a good alternative once you get up to speed.

On “Where did you started and where can I start?”

You should check out this ongoing YouTube playlist: Game Engine Programming. It's incredibly detailed and covers almost (I believe) everything you need to know about creating a game engine from scratch, from design choices to actual implementation.

On “Any good "make your game engine" tutorials?”

Cool! Looks quite comprehensive. I found another one here where he builds an editor in C# on top of the C++ engine: link to this video

On “How to integrate with WPF?”

There's a series on doing a c++/engine layer with a WPF editor frontend right here: Game Engine Series check out the discord server (linked in the video description) where the current discussion is exactly how to do it as cross-platform as possible. Best of luck to you
