Eugenia Cheng introduces the fundamental concepts of category theory from scratch and applies them to everyday questions of privilege and prejudice.

This presentation was the opening keynote of Lambda World 2017 by Dr. Eugenia Cheng. Follow: -twitter.com/47deg -twitter.com/lambda_world Visit: -47deg.com/events for more details. ___ Category theory can be thought of as being 'very abstract algebra'. It is thought of as 'too abstract' by some people, and as 'abstract nonsense' by some others. In this talk, I will show that while it is abstract, it is far from being nonsense. I will argue that the abstraction has a purpose and that broad applicability is one of the powerful consequences. To demonstrate this, I will show how I apply concepts of category theory to important questions of life such as prejudice, privilege, blame and responsibility. I will introduce the category theory concepts from scratch so no prior knowledge is needed. These concepts will include objects and morphisms, isomorphisms and universal properties.

On “How category theory is applied”

"But it’s hard to explain to people not steeped in the subject." I don't agree. Actually it can be understood relatively easily, if it's explained well: link to this video link

On “What Is Applied Category Theory? (2018)”

…ecific example of category theory objects, even if the words are unfamiliar. And there are so many more examples! There is a great pleasure in formalizing the analogies across different aspects of math and engineering. To get a flavor of and gentle introduction to the analogy-making power of category theory, I recommend this talk by Eugenia Cheng: link to this video…

On “How to learn hard things in tech”

Eugenia Cheng has some interesting and accessible videos, e.g.: link to this video and in a similar vein I am enjoying her book: "How to Bake Pi". Getting more into the technical side of things, Bartosz Milewski has good lessons in this playlist: link
