  • An opinion. It argues one side of a question engineers disagree on.

Beginner. No background in the topic needed.

Cloud and DevOpsSystems programmingLinuxDocker and containers

Tom Delalande argues that modern cloud infrastructure is overpriced and demonstrates how to host applications simply using Linux, Docker, and Git.

I tried the music and the feedback is clear enough that I think it's worth uploading a version of this with no music. I'm still learning! I'm sorry :( I really liked the riff I wrote for the intro since it has a time signature of 7/4 but I got carried away a bit... Let's spin up a server a simpler way.I'm experimenting with some background music, let me know what you think. In this video I will be showing how to use fundamentals to spin up a server, replacing cloud providers like AWS, Google Cloud Provider and Microsoft Azure with Linux, Docker and Git. For many applications, the tools we use are grossly over-engineered. I'm trying to force myself to rethink my approach and use simpler tools. Hosting this server is part of that.

What people say. Recommended for teams looking to simplify their infrastructure and reduce technical debt by moving away from complex cloud setups.

On “🆘 First time post — Landed in a complex k8s setup, not sure if we should keep it or pivot?”

Worthwhile giving this video a watch. Reducing technical debt is really important - if you believe that your infra is too complicated and slowing you down, then getting rid of it may be worthwhile. With that said - it might be possible to simplify your existing setup rather than set up something new (even if the new infra is simpler). Not to mention if your requirements change and grow, the Kubernetes setup is more likely to serve those needs than a more static setup. That's not to say you should build based on possible future requirements - but, I mean, if Rome is already built... There's something to be said for using the infra that's already there *if it's built on good foundations,*…

On “Anyone else stuck at an old school .NET job while everyone around you is using the cloud? ”

Azure is overrated and expensive, so many companies are moving off the cloud or going hybrid now. However there are probably much better solutions to your current problem of copying web.configs onto a server. Just because you’re not on the cloud doesn’t mean you can’t modernise your app.
