  • An opinion. It argues one side of a question engineers disagree on.

Kit Langton argues against traditional JavaScript and TypeScript frontend development, advocating for compile-time derived frontends using Scala.js.

Javascript is a nightmare language invented to bring us pain. Typescript is that same nightmare with an `: any` appended to it. It is time to leave the land of boilerplate; to stop writing your frontends in glorified XML and to start deriving them at compile time. In this presentation, Kit Langton will exhort you to come, unlearn your frontend helplessness, indulge in hyperbole, and witness the raw power and semi-tapped potential of Scala.js! Laminar! www.laminar.dev! It is a tremendous joy to write in. I (sorta) gave a talk on it. Check it out :)

On “Deriving the Frontend (A Scala.js Tutorial)”

Howdy! I recorded a little tutorial to go with a talk I gave in December (Stockholm Syndrome Escape Velocity). In that talk, I wax poetic upon the potential of writing vastly less code by turning to type class derivation. However, I only did some fake live coding, and left a lot to the imagination. So I decided to record myself building out a simple Form combinator library, replete with Magnolia-powered derivation, from scratch. Hope you enjoy, internet friends! 🙇‍♂️ EDIT: The Repo

Thank you! If you are also looking backward to past talks, I did another one on full stack Scala. 😉
