On “What are your thoughts on mixing Kotlin with an existing Java legacy project?”

…e're about 10% Kotlin of the Android Studio specific code. And so what we do is we only take new functionality, write that in Kotlin. And it is possible because Kotlin has great interoperability with Java. So you can write a single class in Kotlin and keep the rest in Java or have 99% of your code in Kotlin and have only some leftovers in Java. [video…

On “Does JetBrains rewrite IntelliJ IDEA's code in Kotlin?”

Jeffrey van Gogh has mentioned this topic on Google I/O, it's about Android Studio, but still interesting I think: [video >Please don't take "Kotlin first" as "I need to go take all my Java code and rewrite it in Kotlin". That's not what we want you to do. Look at Android studio. That's many many hundred thousand lines of code. Right now, we're about 10% Kotlin of the Android Studio specific code. And so what we do is we only take new functionality, write that in Kotlin. And it is possible because Kotlin has great interoperability with Java. So you can write a single class in Kotlin and keep the rest in Java or have 99% of your code in Kotlin and have only some leftovers in Java.
