Jonas Kruckenberg explains how Rust panics, stack unwinding, and the Drop trait work under the hood.

*Panic! At The Disk Oh! - Jonas Kruckenberg at EuroRust 2025* Unwrapping results, assertions, divide by zero: we've all seen our Rust programs panic and crash. But have you ever wondered how that happens under the hood? Wonder no more! Over the last year I went down this rabbit hole way too deep and have returned to tell you all about Rusts most cursed feature. You will learn how panics, stack unwinding, the drop trait, and more work *About Jonas Kruckenberg* I'm Jonas, open-sourcerer and builderer of things, working as a Software Engineer at Mainmatter. I'm currently building the next generation Operating System. Previous work you might know: Tauri, vite-imagetools. -------------------- *EuroRust 2026* – Get your ticket for EuroRust 2026 now and join us in Barcelona! 👉 eurorust.eu EuroRust is organized by Mainmatter, experts in Rust and distributed systems 👉 mainmatter.com/rust/

What people say. Recommended as an in-depth explanation of Rust's panic stack unwinding infrastructure and its impact on binary size.

On “Why are zig binaries so small compared to other languages?”

Yeah, I would also think Rust has a lot more things packed into the binary by default. E.g. the panic stack unwinding handling infrastructure is huge, which it has to be to keep the happy path fast. But you can strip a lot of this if you know how. Still, C and Zig seemed to get even smaller binaries, even by default.
