Programming languagesSwift

Paul Hudson provides a fast-paced crash course covering the essential language features of Swift for experienced developers or reviewers.

This video walks through all the essential language features of Swift in just under one hour, and is aimed at two groups of people: folks who have completed up to day 14 of the 100 Days of SwiftUI and want to review what they've learned, and developers with extensive experience of other languages who want to transfer their knowledge to Swift quickly. This video is very fast! If you're struggling to understand concepts such as arrays, functions, closures, and similar, you should consider following the videos in my 100 Days of SwiftUI course at hackingwithswift.com/100/swiftui – they are much slower, providing much more explanation and example code along the way. Introduction Creating constants and variables, Strings Integers Decimals Booleans Joining strings Arrays Dictionaries Sets Enums Type annotations Conditions Switch statements The ternary conditional operator Loops Functions Returning multiple values from functions Customizing parameter labels Providing default values for parameters Handling errors in functions Closures Trailing closures and shorthand syntax Structs Computed properties Property observers Custom initializers Access control Static properties and methods Classes Protocols Extensions Protocol extensions Optionals Unwrapping optionals with guard Nil coalescing Optional chaining Optional try? This was also a lot faster paced and a good crash course if you just want something to learn how to code in swift. link to this video

On “Took the plunge”

There's loads of free resources and courses out there for Swift and SwiftUI, I found Hacking with Swift to be quite good, you can just put one of the playlists on 2x speed and go through it all fairly quickly. If you already have programming experience then something like the "Learn the Essentials of Swift in one hour" would be good, to understand the language. And then there's a playlist for SwiftUI specifically which is better once you already understand the language. I also thought CodeWithChris's "How to Make an App in 8 Days" was pretty good to go through the process from start to finish of making an app, since he also covers the Apple ecosystem and Xcode. Hope that helps!

On “Planning to switch to Swift instead of React Native. Need advice.”

…e same Swift UI code automatically adapt the UI to your target Apple devices, a common mistake people make is trying to learn Swift UI. It is useless learning Swift UI without a solid knowledge of Swift. And learning Swift takes time. There are some excellent free resources out there for learning Swift. For videos, there is Paul Hudson: [video If you can read Medium articles here is a good intro: https://medium.com/dev-genius/conceptual-introduction-to-the-swift-programming-language-part-1-31b78e7a9211 Notice that I am avoiding the official Apple documentation: https://developer.apple.com/documentation/swift/ Because it is too dry. Unfortunately Swift evolves too quickly…

On “Best way forward coming from the Javascript / Typescript world?”

He made a condensed version of those hundred videos into one hour long video, if you want a faster pace. Edit: I think it was this one: link to this video

You convinced me, I’m starting today! Really appreciate your input, thank you. You mean I should just watch this video?: link to this video and then dive into the challenges on the website? and is the video still up to date with latest changes and iOS17? (If there are huge changes)
