David Wilson discusses the current status of the Emacs X Window Manager and explores potential paths forward, including Wayland integration.

In this stream, we'll discuss what the current status of EXWM means for the project and my own ideas for how we might move forward in a new and interesting way! How much code to make a Wayland XELB? I read Thoughts on writing a wayland window manager with wlroots, a wonderful short overview. Found out that the wlroots library very recently grew a higher level API as the author was hoping: only 4 days ago, wlroots closed issue 1826. So, while it's been a meme that Wayland compositors take more code than X window managers, is that still true? Especially if you assume we don't mind the "interesting" elisp part (exwm.el or equivalent) growing to arbitrary sizes, the wlroots-bindings (xelb.el equivalent) might not need to be very big at all, same for the C program it'd be talking to, possibly similar to tinywl.c (971 LoC and full of comments). That…
