Programming languagesTools and practiceKotlinJava and the JVMInside tech companies

James Ward, Brad Hawkes, and John discuss Google's adoption of Kotlin for server-side development, including challenges and Java interoperability.

Kotlin is now a recommended programming language for server-side JVM usage at Google, while still providing access to a large existing Java ecosystem. With over 11 million lines of Kotlin code at Google (across server and Android), we've done a number of things to ensure our developers are successful with Kotlin. This talk will explore the challenges we faced, and the reasons we're adding Kotlin as an available language and how we've made it a successful change.

Coroutines and Java interop Hello! I'm looking to start a project that will live alongside a big Java system. I would also like to use ktor with Netty as a webserver to achieve a smaller memory footprint. However I'm concern about how would the interop with Java would happen as highlighted by this great talk: [video Considering that I might need to call into my legacy Java code or maybe use some java library that both could either block or rely on Thread Local etc... Could you share how you tackle this problem? My current idea is to have a interop layer that would dispach the call using a Java threadpool or something? Thanks in advance!!

Server-side Kotlin in Google Hey there, Has anyone found some more information regarding the usage of Kotlin in Google after this talk? I was really hoping that an engineering blog or an article will pop up with some more details about the decision and maybe even some of the data and statistics that Google collected as part of the decision-making process. This would be incredibly beneficial for anyone, who is trying to convince their company that adopting Kotlin is a good thing. Does anyone know if there are any plans for more info coming out? Also - would it be correct to say that Kotlin is now preffered/recommended over Java for server-side usage in Google or is it just a case of - K…

[video Google also uses Kotlin at server side. The reason is Loom is a good future but Kotlin coroutine is confirmed for now.
