Jynn Nelson explains the history, current implementation, and future goals of bootstrapping the Rust compiler.

"Bootstrapping" is the process of building a compiler written in its target language. Bootstrapping has been used since the development of ALGOL and LISP in the 1960s. In this talk, you'll learn the history of the bootstrapping the Rust compiler, how bootstrap works today, and some big ideas for bootstrap in the future. You'll also have a chance to get involved in working on bootstrap.

What people say. Recommended for understanding how the Rust compiler is built using previous versions of itself.

…tc version N (the difference being that it's compiled to wasm rather than the native arch). As such, this seed can compile rustc N and rustc N+1 (and all previous rustcs), but as far as I understand, it cannot directly compile rustc N+2 (because that may use language features introduced in N+1, as explained in Joshua Nelson's talk at RustConf 2022 link to this video So it's more of a "checkpoint" that doesn't alleviate the chaining need to obtain more recent versions of rustc. Besides, in terms of distribution, this "rustc.N.wasm" seed needs to be produced and downloaded from somewhere (presumably the Rust official website). How is that different from downloading the native rustc version N? It seems t…
