Chris Thalinger explains how Twitter uses the GraalVM compiler in production to optimize JVM performance and reduce CPU utilization.

Twitter is a massively distributed system with thousands of machines running thousands of JVMs. In any similar big system a small change in performance and CPU utilization is multiplied thousandfold and results in big savings. Electricity costs, cooling costs, and possibly reduction of server farm size. One way to improve Java performance and reduce CPU utilization is to simply generate better machine code. Simply is obviously not trivial but doable. Twitter is going down that road and experimenting with Graal to generate better code and reduce cost.

Consequences for Scala with the GraalVM announcement GraalVM v1.0 was announced yesterday and Twitter using it in production and contributing to it since last year. Its optimizer includes more advanced escape analysis and inlining than Hotspot and can reduce the number of heap allocations substantially. It also features whole program optimization and AOT binary image compilation eliminating the need for a JVM runtime. To me it seems like it's time to scrap the Scala whole program optimizer, linker and Scala native projects, and instead focus on contributing to the Graal project. There are only so many resources available in the Scala team and it's important to put them to effective use.…
