What people say. Engineers frequently cite this interview for Mike Acton's views on self-directed learning, curiosity in hiring, and data-oriented design.

On “Create your own game engine but don't use it (2017)”

Mike Acton has some pretty common sense views on this: link to this video Basically if your making your own game engine then use the context in which you are working. If you are going to end up with something generic like Unity maybe you should just use something like Unity from the start.

HandmadeCon 2015 - Mike Acton Mike Acton is Engine Director at Insomniac Games, and is perhaps most infamous for his talk at CppConf 2014, in which many nice things were broken and real-world learnings dispensed. This interview has a bunch of interesting questions and answers handled by this fellow.

On “Ask HN: Is it a waste of time to teach yourself data science without a degree?”

As Mike Acton (Data Oriented Design Guru) once said in an interview "I don't care what you learned in school.. I care about what you learned of your own volition" paraphrased from 1. It never hurts to learn new things. Another HN poster suggested this channel for beefing up on linear algebra, and I absolutely love it 2. 1 link to this video 2 link

On ““Clean” Code, Horrible Performance”

You could spend 2 minutes looking up who you are talking about. This video from 2015 where Casey is interviewing Mike Acton: link to this video Also this course where he specifically talks about Numpy and pure Python: link

On “Try to fix it one level deeper”

Mike Acton said the same thing in an interview. He said curiosity is the best indicator if a candidate will be a good hire. Casey Muratori was interviewing him at HandmadeHero Con back in 2016. Here is the snippet: link to this video

On “DCIC: A new book for teaching beginners programming and computer science”

I haven't looked at the book, but I love this concept. Casey Muratori freed my mind on the subject. OOP is terrible. So many of the smartest people in the field have come to this conclusion on their own over the years: Mike Acton at CPP Con 2014 Stoyan Nikolov at CPP Con 2018 Mike Acton and Casey Muratori Discussing justifications for DOD Jonathan Blow (he gives yet more resources on the subject in his talk).

On “How did you guys get better at coding?”

I put this on another post with a similar question: Practice A talk with Mike Acton , he was engine lead at insomniac games and shipped multiple AAA titles then went to unity where he is making big improvements to unity as a whole. link to this video it starts at 58:00 the whole talk is worth watching but this part to the end might help.
