Colin Fleming demonstrates how to debug Clojure code using the Cursive IntelliJ plugin and discusses JVM debugging limitations.

Debugging Clojure code has traditionally been something of a black art. Cursive provides a complete JVM debugger based on the one provided in IntelliJ, including breakpoints, stepping and expression evaluation. In this talk, we'll see some of the features that Cursive provides to make debugging easy and discuss some tricks and tips for debugging Clojure code. We'll also discuss the JDI that the debugger is based on, and how some of its limitations affect debugging functional languages.

What people say. Recommended as a great demonstration of Clojure debugging capabilities and JVM debugger limitations in Cursive.

Cursive Clojure currently has the best set of debugging tools for Clojure. For an overview of what it is capable of see link to this video

On “free IntelliJ Clojure plugins?”

I really love using cursive, I can use vim keybindings with the IdeaVim plugin, and the debugging is great and getting better ( link to this video ). I would strongly encourage people who have not already committed to an alternative editor to try it with the free license, and then upgrade when you use it for work. I'm not suggesting everyone can or should do this, but I actually paid for a license to show my support instead of getting a free one, even though I'm eligible: the author colin fleming looks like he's been working on it for 5 years unpaid, I'd quite like him to still be working on it 5 years from now :)

Cursive supports this (I haven't tried it myself). Colin Fleming presented on it at Clojure/West: link to this video

On “Clojure Development in Windows environment?”

Cursive has a very nice symbol debugger, see this talk by the author at Clojure West.

On “Tips on Debugging?”

I'm pretty much in love with Cursive's debugger - link to this video You should try it, it really helps you wrap your head around how some code works with all that stepping, breakpointing, evaluating and all the magic it enables.

Cursive plugin integrates with IntelliJ and allows you to use its excellent debugger. You can step all the way into Java source if you want. link to this video

I don't _think_ there's anything quite like Ruby's pry for example (the closest thing is probably this), but debugging Clojure with Cursive is really great. Take a look at this video to learn about it - link to this video
