  • An opinion. It argues one side of a question engineers disagree on.

Intermediate. Assumes working knowledge.

Yann LeCun discusses the limitations of current autoregressive LLMs and argues that AI systems must build abstract world models to achieve true reasoning.

Yann LeCun is the chief AI scientist at Meta. He joins Big Technology Podcast to discuss the strengths and limitations of current AI models, weighing in on why they've been unable to invent new things despite possessing almost all the world's written knowledge. LeCun digs deep into AI science, explaining why AI systems must build an abstract knowledge of the way the world operates to truly advance. We also cover whether AI research will hit a wall, whether investors in AI will be disappointed, and the value of open source after DeepSeek. Tune in for a fascinating conversation with one of the world's leading AI pioneers. Chapters: Introduction to Jan LeCun and AI's limitations Why LLMs can't make scientific discoveries Reasoning in AI systems: limitations of chain of thought LLMs approaching diminishing returns and the need for a new paradigm "A PhD next to you" vs. actual intelligent systems Consumer AI adoption vs. enterprise implementation challenges Historical parallels: expert systems and the risk of another AI winter Four critical capabilities AI needs for true understanding Testing AI's physics understanding with the paper test Why video generation systems don't equal real comprehension Self-supervised learning and its limitations for understanding JEPA: Building abstract representations for reasoning and planning Open source vs. proprietary AI development Conclusion

On “Why AI systems don't learn – On autonomous learning from cognitive science”

In this podcast episode0 he does talk about this kind of model and how it "learns about physics" through experience instead of just ingesting theorical material. It's quite eye opening. 0. link to this video

On “I used AI. It worked. I hated it”

This is not an appeal to authority, but this video probably contains the answers to your questions if you are open minded about it link to this video

On “Tracing the thoughts of a large language model”

What? The "article" is from anthropic, so I think they would know what they write about. Also, RL is an additional training process that does not negate that GPT / transformers are left-right autoencoders that are effectively next token predictors.
