On “Joe Armstrong has died”

This is devastating, RIP. I watched this talk a few months ago link to this video called "Computer Science - A Guide for the Perplexed" It was superb, I think it's unfortunate that he had to rush through it because of time constraints, his anecdotes and delivery were really engaging and funny.

On “Let's Not Dumb Down the History of Computer Science (2014)”

One of my favorite talks by Joe Armstrong -- computer science, a guide for the perplexed. He talks through what he feels are some important but forgotten ideas in CS link to this video

On “Joe Armstrong has died”

That is so sad, he was in his late 60s and it seemed like he had a lot of life left in him, talking about how software can get better and having a great (and sometimes snarky) outlook on the profession. Highly recommend his thesis (2003) and a few of his great interviews/presentations for anyone who isn’t familiar with Joe, it captures a lot of what he thought about and pushed for in his professional life. link link link link to this video I hope his family and friends can find some comfort in how much he was appreciated and admired in the development community.

On “Is there an interest in John Backus function-level programming?”

Can you expand a bit more your question? I'm aware of the paper J.B. presented when he got the Turing award, and also Joe Armstrong of the Erlang team praised it a lot in this very insightful talk of his. From what I understand many current functional languages are pretty close to the realization Backus' vision. But not sure if you had something more specific in your mind, or something totally different.

On “Getting Overwhelmed By CS Degree”

…'t let that fool you into thinking those all the frameworks & choices are what constitutes CS degree. I would suggest you look at the video but only with the promise that you will keep two ways ahead: One is you will chase the current tech to know where we all stand overall. And another is how to think fundamentally dissecting everything noisy: [video Just remember that, you must take up the tech that is thrown at you at its face value. They all are best & latest 21st century material. And this video is just about everything you need to shake up that mind which is bogged down with tools & not tool-making. We need both.…
