What people say. Highly recommended as an exceptionally clear tutorial on building logic gates from scratch using transistors.

On “Integrated Circuits Can Be Easy to Understand with the Right Teachers”

…he builds an actual functioning computer, with instructions and microcode and output, from scratch on a breadboard, along with terrific explanations. But that is just the tip of the iceberg. All his videos are amazing, and super easy to understand. Here is his version of how nor gates work: which is way easier to understand to me than this video: link to this video Here is his whole channel: link and his website: link…

Not a book but I really love Ben Eater's youtube channel. Here he walks through how logic gates work. And if you want to understand computers at a lower level he has a playlist where he builds an 8 bit computer from scratch on solderless breadboards.

On “Can someone tell if my idea for computer will work? I'm wanting to build a computer without abstraction.”

how far do you want to go down the stack of abstraction layers? down to discrete transistors? then start here: link to this video or you want to make your own semiconductor components? then start here: link to this video or you want to construct your own silicon atoms from subatomic particles? then ask these guys because i dont fucking know where to look: https://www.home.cern/ OR DO YOU WANT TO MAKE YOUR OWN SUBATOMIC PARTICLES?? then start here: https://www.getyourheadoutofyourass.com

On “Firmware Is Broken Terminology”

The thing that blew my mind was how you can replace discrete transistor logic with memory. While it is sort of obvious in retrospect. I think it an important insight into the nature of computation. On “Modern CPUs have a backstage cast”

Something like that? link or link to this video and there are truckloads more of these. There used to be electronics sets for kids with breadboards (some of them larger scale for easier physical handling then standard breadboards), and they'd had manuals with them explaining all the things. I remember that they also contained descriptions of basic gates like (N)AND, (N)OR, NOT, plus flip flops for storing 1 bit of data.
