William Binney and ACLU lawyers discuss the National Security Agency's mass surveillance programs and their conflict with the US Constitution.

Speakers: JAMEEL JAFFER DEPUTY LEGAL DIRECTOR, AMERICAN CIVIL LIBERTIES UNION WILLIAM BINNEY FORMER OFFICIAL, NATIONAL SECURITY AGENCY JAMES BAMFORD INVESTIGATIVE JOURNALIST ALEX ABDO STAFF ATTORNEY, AMERICAN CIVIL LIBERTIES UNION The National Security Agency, the largest, most powerful spy agency in the world, has taken in an estimated 15 to 20 trillion communications since 9/11, often in defiance of the Constitution and Congressional statutes. The NSA’s goal, some say, is to collect virtually all of our electronic communications to allow mass data mining reminiscent of the notorious and now reportedly-defunct program, Total Information Awareness. The limits on the agency’s authority to sweep up and analyze this information are critical to our safety and our privacy. The NSA is investing vast amounts in increasing its data storage, code-breaking and analysis capabilities, frequently claiming the investments are for foreign intelligence or “cybersecurity” purposes. However, instead of keeping its equipment trained on terrorism suspects or foreign governments, the NSA is increasingly monitoring the communications of innocent people. Longtime NSA official and whistleblower Bill Binney will join investigative journalist and NSA expert James Bamford and ACLU lawyer Alex Abdo to explore the NSA’s goals, reach, and capabilities, and the legality (or illegality) of its actions. The panel will be moderated by the Deputy Director of the ACLU, Jameel Jaffer. What people say. Recommended as an early, detailed public warning about NSA mass surveillance, recorded a year before the Edward Snowden leaks.

On “NSA whistleblower warns of surveillance state”

A year before Snowden took off to Hong Kong, William Binney was on a panel at Def Con where NSA surveillance was talked about at length, worth a watch - link to this video lot of the stuff which was later leaked by Snowden is discussed here, nice to see Binney vindicated. Interestingly, the NSA facility in Hawaii where Snowden was working at the time is mentioned by name. I often wonder if this Defcon talk inspired him to do what he did.

On “'Everyone in US under virtual surveillance' - NSA whistleblower”

The Defcon video is similar: link to this video (not sure if this link is bootleg) link (just the audio) has the ACLU and the same guy if that makes it more legit. The 10 zetabyte storage capacity estimate is based on building size. I think we need more details.

The NSA is wholesale collecting data and later using a secret court to authorize them to query their own databases 1. PRISM is not just an interface. It is officially known as SIGAD US-984XN which means it intercepts and collects electronic communications. 1 Bamford, Binney and the ACLU at Defcon 2012 link to this video

On “Edward Snowden: Permanent Record”

I remember the DefCon 20 talk, Bigger Monsters, Weaker Chains with William Binney - link to this video This was in 2012, 2013 was when Snowden did what he did. I always wondered if he saw this talk and was motivated by it.
