A PBS documentary following Netscape engineers during the high-pressure year they open-sourced the browser as Mozilla.

Code Rush, produced in 2000 and broadcast on PBS, is an inside look at living and working in Silicon Valley at the height of the dot-com era. The film follows a group of Netscape engineers as they pursue at that time a revolutionary venture to save their company - giving away the software recipe for Netscape's browser in exchange for integrating improvements created by outside software developers. The copyright to the film is now available under Creative common licence vers. 3 for interested viewers to download and use. In the future the original footage from which this film was made will be accessible under the same terms. Please visit : www.clickmovement.org/coderush

On “Ask HN: What are your favorite films about startups?”

Although Netscape was already pretty large by the time, Code Rush is a great SV tech documentary about the initial release of Mozilla; it's also now under creative commons and is available on youtube: link to this video

On “Learn to code like it's 1996”

…Everybody and his dog started a startup around that time, until they had a bubble bust circa 1999-2000. Seriously man, you have to check up on the history of this "coding" thing. You seem to be missing a lot of knowledge, that's not just folklore but also essential to a well groomed developer. Here's a 1998 documentary on the building of Mozilla: link to this video Here's the Hacker's Dictionary: link…

On “What are some of the best computer / programming related documentaries out there?”

Project Code Rush - The Beginnings of Netscape. Shows the story of Netscape and the beginning of Mozilla, with the team at Netscape working to ship out their first open source browser and eventually ending at Netscape's takeover by AOL. Has some kickass programmer's, namely - JWZ, Stuart Parmenter aka Pavlov, Scott Collins. Has UNIX workstations, good 'ole keyboards and CRT monitors, makes me wish to have been born maybe 15 years earlier. Another good one I watched in 2013 was BBC's - Defeating the Hackers. A documentary on cyber warfare , computer security , new trends like Quantum Computing in security. Definitely a must watch, it was taken down on youtube sometime back. I have a copy…

On “Startups And Work/Life Balance”

I have a lot of experience in this area and also have the same family background as yourself. I touch on some of your topics in another 'work-life' thread here: link and link Having gone through EXACTLY what your trying, I can say it is very hard. How many startup attempts of mine failed because there 'wasn't' enough time in the day? I count 4. How many side projects failed because there 'wasn't' enough time in the day? 35% of them couldn't be completed. At one point I was only sleeping 2 hours a day for MONTHS. Hows that for compression, and stupidity... I learned the hard way. You pretty much have 4 good and immediate paths: 1.) Pure luck. Need I say more. OR 2.) Pay off your debt asap…
