On “Difference between Production Engineer (PE) and Site Reliability Engineer (SRE)”

Pedro, one of the people that built up PE at Facebook talks a bit about the journey from SRE/SRO/Appops to PE in [video . Ultimately: SRE at a lot of places is a role in which a software engineer is tasked with running operations. The relationship between SWE and SRE is often described by things like error budgets and SRE ultimately tries to impose these things. There often is still a "deployment wall" in place. PE, at least as FB does it, means e.g. flat oncall rotations. Production Enginners will HELP you to run a service, but they won't run the service for you. Most places (as with devops before and 'agile' before that) probably mix and match whatever parts they want and just keep ca…
