Grant Sanderson explains Euler's formula by treating velocity as a rotating vector to build geometric intuition for complex exponents.

Euler's formula about e to the i pi, explained with velocities to positions. Special thanks to these supporters: 3blue1brown.com Not familiar with the calculus referenced in this video? Try taking a look at this one: youtu.be/m2MIpDrF7Es Another perspective on this formula, from Mathologer: youtu.be/-dhHrg-KbJ0 Another perspective from this channel: youtu.be/mvmuCPvRoWQ And yet another from the blog Better Explained: betterexplained.com/articles/intuitive-understanding-of-eule… I'm not sure where the perspective shown in this video originates. I do know you can find it in Tristan Needham's excellent book "Visual Complex Analysis", but if anyone has a sense of the first occurrence of this intuition do feel free to share. It's simple and natural enough, though, that it's probably a view which has been independently thought up many times over. What people say. Highly recommended for building an intuitive, geometric understanding of Euler's identity without relying on dry algebraic proofs.

On “Why is e^(pi I) = -1?”

On “Alternative notation for exponents, logs and roots? (2011)”

IMHO, the "deeper truth" is addition is translation and multiplication is rotation/stretching (at least when it comes to rings and fields). It involves getting a geometric understanding of e to the pi i, and 3blue1brown explains it better than I could: link 6.28 min link to this video 3.14 min link 25 min

On “Show HN: Kalk, A calculator with math syntax, complex numbers”

You actually have to understand calculus for that to actually prove it to you, but, you can show that it seems to work out numerically with a bit of programming knowledge, which I imagine is more common on Hacker News. I don't think either the numerical or symbolic proofs really help build intuition though. This video 1 kinda helps, although it glosses over the critical fact "multiplying by i rotates counterclockwise 90°." 1 link to this video
