David Whitney critiques the dogmatic application of design patterns and Clean Code, advocating for radical simplicity and intentionality in software design.

A brief history of Design in software, reflecting on the history of the design patterns movement, clean code, and the long shadow they have cast over software development in the 2010s and beyond. In this session we'll talk about intentionality in software design - and how you can radically simplify the way you build applications today to make them more meaningful to the humans that maintain them. A radical look into why *every single character matters*, and why you should probably burn your copies of Clean Code. What people say. Recommended for developers looking to simplify their architecture and move away from the unnecessary complexity of Clean Architecture.

On “Why is Clean Architecture so popular?”

Any architect worth half a crap will take an evolutionary approach to the architecture. Requirements change, skill of teams improves, problems get identified, popular architecture approaches will come and go, etc. Software architecture needs to respond to the environment, not define it. If the developers are familiar with certain approaches, that needs to be a factor. Subscribing to any particular methodology is an exercise in excruciating pain and will almost certainly cause problems. Be holistic in your approach. The only things I tend to crack down on are nomenclature and code prose. Developers get extremely lazy about those, even though they are probably the most important. [A Very…

I agree. I think you would like this talk by David Whitney. link to this video

On “Vertical slice architecture learning resource”

yes we do have a sample VSA repo: https://github.com/dj-nitehawk/MiniDevTo and if anyone's looking to detox from onion/clean arch, check out these videos: - link to this video - link to this video - link to this video though I highly doubt many would be interested, because imho if someone has already made peace with the unnecessary complexity and layers of misdirection of clean arch, they would not be that attracted to VSA's actual cleanliness and simplicity 😋
