On “Any recommendations on books for understanding the Scala compiler or compilers in general?”
Graydon Hoare (the creator of Rust and now working for Apple on Swift) was asked this questions (about compilers in general, not scalac) last year and recommended the following books in addition to the tiger book, TAPL and Advanced Compiler Design and Implementation which were already mentioned:
- Programming Language Pragmatics
4th Edition
- Practical Foundations for Programming Languages
- Garbage Collection which seems irrelevant since you want to contribute to the scala compiler and not the JVM
