Tools and practiceVim, Emacs and editorsThe shell and command lineRust

Jon Gjengset walks through his development environment, including Neovim, XMonad, tmux, and other tools he uses for Rust programming.

After and during nearly every live stream, I get asked about my setup, my editor, my browser, and various other tidbits that are mostly unrelated to the thing we're building. I figured it'd be worth the time to take a session where I go through all those things so that I have somewhere to point other people that ask, and that's what this video is! I also took a bunch of Q&A over the course of the stream about Rust development, Linux, and programming in general, so hopefully there'll be some interesting tidbits in there for everyone :) All my config files can be found here: github.com/jonhoo/configs Introduction Window manager (xmonad) System tray (polybar) Terminal (alacritty) Shell (fish + tmux) Editor (neovim) Keyboard (Filco Ninja Majestouch-2) File listing (exa) Email (mutt + buzz) Rust editor integration (rls) Cargo tools OS (Arch) More cargo tools Using and learning tokio More cargo tools Contrast futures w/ js callbacks More cargo tools then vs and_then in futures Browser (Firefox) Terminal greeting prompt autojump xmonad and xwindows Getting started with tokio File management (mirage) Picking projects More file management (mupdf) More on picking and maintaining projects Keyboard switches (browns) Writing documents (neovim + latex) Vim plugins and config Borrowing, references, and lifetimes Reading the standard library Next stream! What people say. Recommended as a great guide to setting up Neovim and a terminal-based workflow for Rust development.

On “Crust of Rust: Dispatch and Fat Pointers [video]”

He has a video on his channel for his editor setup: link to this video

On “What IDE (or editor) do you use for Rust development?”

I use Vscode primarily, but these comments make me want to improve my emacs setup and give that another shot. Jon Gjengset uses neovim and has a great video explaining his entire setup.

On “New to rust. Rust with vim: : autocomplete, snippets, linters and compile from vim.”

It might covers much more than you're interested in, but a guy on youtube who posts live-coding sessions in Rust put up a video talking about his full development setup which includes vim. Here's the link
