Systems programmingProgramming languagesConcurrency and parallelismJava and the JVMLisp and Clojure

Jessica Kerr compares various concurrency models on the JVM, including ExecutorService, Scala actors, and Clojure's core.async.

A careful design lets you write a concurrent application without thinking about deadlock or synchronization. Getting to that design takes a lot of thinking. This session delivers the background you need to make good decisions about concurrency tools. You’ll learn what’s available in Java, including how to tune an ExecutorService for your threading needs. After that, learn how this impacts higher-level abstractions in JVM languages: choose from various Futures, Scala's akka actors, and Clojure's core.async coroutines. Whether you’re working in pure Java or the best concurrency models the JVM has to offer, this session will help you make design decisions that keep your code deadlock-free. She works for Outpace, speaks at conferences here and in Europe, blogs, tweets, and encourages two daughters to question her authority.

What people say. Recommended as an informative and entertaining overview of JVM concurrency paradigms.

On “Julia Evans on Strange Loop 2014”

Most (maybe all?) talks from Strange Loop 2014 have been posted on their YouTube channel. I've watched a couple so far. As with any conference, some are good and some are meh. I agree with Julia about the talk Concurrency Options on the JVM. It's (obviously) JVM focused, but gives a quick, decent overview of a lot of concurrency models you'll see in other languages. I tried watching Idris: Practical Dependent Types with Practical Examples and gave up. I'll try it again later if anyone cares to point it out as a great talk, but it switched into live coding and I felt like far too much magic was going unexplained and stopped. Usually I power through and see the payoff eventually, but I…

On “Clojure VS Scala concurrency model (looking for material)”

I am also a newbie in both scala and clojure, and found this presentation by Jessica Kerr really informative and entertaining. It covers broadly some concurrency paradigms you can run on the JVM, including Scala Actors, Clojure Agents and Channels. Maybe it helps as a high level starting point.
