On “Most affordable but good hosting?”

…ency of 20 would consme 10,000 vCPU seconds and 10,000 GiB-seconds of memory on a 1 vCPU, 1 GiB instance. It's trivially easy to deploy if you can put together a `Dockerfile`. I have two small repos here: - https://github.com/CharlieDigital/gcr-dn6-api - https://github.com/CharlieDigital/playwright-scrape-api And two videos: - Short version: link to this video - Long version: link to this video…

On “Why Is It So Hard To Find Modern ASP.NET Hosting?”

**Google Cloud Run.** The best option for weekend hackers, startups, small projects. - Scales to 0. - Free until you get any actual volume (a few million requests per month free and several hours worth of compute (but keep in mind, it auto-scales down to 0 when not in use so the free limit goes a looooong way)) - $0.40/mo. assuming 50ms requests @100,000 requests/day (3 million reqeusts/mo.) - So easy to integrate with GitHub - Easy to add a custom domain - Slap a standard `Dockerfile` into your project - SSL: automatic and free 7 minute walkthrough including SSL+custom domain: link to this video (With narration: link to this video Repo: https://github.com/CharlieDigital/gcr-dn6-api

On “Questions about making a FaaS web app”

…Practically, you won't be paying unless this service really takes off. If you need to run periodic jobs while scaling to 0, set up Google Cloud Scheduler to periodically invoke your service (e.g. run a nightly sync job). This approach is nominally free (fractions of a penny to host the container images). Short video here showing it in action: link to this video (full walkthrough here: link to this video **Multiple APIS**. Don't over think it for now; just make the separate API calls and aggregate the results in your own code. Dont' overcomplicate it from the get go. The secret to weekend and side projects is to keep it as simple as possible so it's easy to jump back in and work on it. The more complicat…

On “Dotnet on Mac”

I use VS Code full time for .NET development on a Mac M1. I have a short walkthrough here deploying .NET workfloads built on a Mac into GCP Cloud Run as container workloads: link to this video (Incidentally, a great way to access a lot of free compute) In my day job, I work at one of the few startups using C# and .NET on the backend. The team is a mixture of Rider and VSC. I have both, but find myself defaulting to VSC because it feels snappier to me than Rider (and I can't quite figure out how to prevent Rider from reformatting my code 🤣). I would recommend starting with VSC before Rider. Spend a good month with it and commit to using it. You'll have to learn a few things, which I think is a…
