An in-depth tutorial covering pointers, pointer arithmetic, memory allocation, and pointer types in C and C++.

Pointers in C and C++ are often challenging to understand. In this course, they will be demystified, allowing you to use pointers more effectively in your code. The concepts you learn in this course apply to both C and C++. ✏️ Course developed by Harsha and Animesh from MyCodeSchool. 🔗 Read all about their amazing story here: freecodecamp.org/news/mycodeschool-youtube-channel-history/ 🔗 Check out the MyCodeSchool channel: youtube.com/user/mycodeschool 🔗 Check out the MyCodeSchool website: mycodeschool.com/ ❤️ Support for this channel comes from our friends at Scrimba – the coding platform that's reinvented interactive learning: scrimba.com/freecodecamp ⭐️ Course Contents ⭐️ ⌨️ () Introduction to pointers in C/C++ ⌨️ () Working with pointers ⌨️ () Pointer types, pointer arithmetic, void pointers ⌨️ () Pointers to Pointers in C/C++ ⌨️ () Pointers as function arguments - call by reference ⌨️ () Pointers and arrays ⌨️ () Arrays as function arguments ⌨️ () Character arrays and pointers - part 1 ⌨️ () Character arrays and pointers - part 2 ⌨️ () Pointers and 2-D arrays ⌨️ () Pointers and multidimensional arrays ⌨️ () Pointers and dynamic memory - stack vs heap ⌨️ () Dynamic memory allocation in C - malloc calloc realloc free ⌨️ () Pointers as function returns in C/C++ ⌨️ () Function Pointers in C / C++ ⌨️ () Function pointers and callbacks ⌨️ () Memory leak in C/C++ ⭐️ Special thanks to our Champion supporters! ⭐️ 🏆 Loc Do 🏆 Joseph C 🏆 DeezMaster -- Learn to code for free and get a developer job: freecodecamp.org Read hundreds of articles on programming: freecodecamp.org/news

On “Pointers in C”

You never came into the need to allocate memory? Or pass command line arguments? Or use strings? Arrays? Most of the library functions? 😮 I would rather believe that you never came into the need to use pointers *in some specific way*. Anyway... Pointers are a fundamental part of the language and any C programming book will cover it with great detail. This guy talks about them for 3.5 hours.

Pointers in C Explained – They're Not as Difficult as You Think Pointers in C/C++[Full Course](link to this video Check these two resources on freecodecamp. It was always hard to understand pointers for me too but after covering both the resources I never had to look back again. Also, when you are learning try to code along with the tutorial and do some experiments with code too to get a better idea how pointers work.

Literally the second result is pointers in C/C++ (full course). Nearly 4 hrs long. Further down there is a playlist with 17 videos, Pointers in C/C++ Further down there is another playlist with 42 videos, Arrays and Pointers in C Put in some effort here.

…ogramming language. Unfortunately, it is old, C has got many new features since then, but nevertheless, the concepts are very well illustrated. Also, as the C programming language's most interesting and challenging thing consists of pointers, I would recommend this yt tutorial, which is brilliant, in order to have a better grasp of this concept: [video . Moreover, if you want to use C in the adequate circumstances I would suggest you to use it for embedded systems programming, if you want to dive into algorithms or AI it is better to study python, if you want to design apps java or c++ would be a better choice, or maybe if you want to create games, then c++ and c# are the solution. On “hey guys, i HATE c language cuz i just dont seem to ever get the knack of it. Can someone tell me an excellent resource for the same?”

I found this playlist helpful by Neso Academy. If you need extra help with pointers like I did, this video by MyCodeSchool might help. And then you can try to apply all you learnt to a project, maybe like implementing a DSA library

On “What is a good source for learning the low-level stuff (stack, heap, buffer, etc.)?”

Some of the resources that helped me understand how computers work on the low level: Dr. Murphy's lectures: https://archive.org/details/dr-murphy-computing-lectures This video on how pointers work in C: link to this video And the book "Computer Organization and Design: The Hardware/Software Interface" by David Patterson. I recommend you check those up :)

On “I want to start learning C to be able to understand more about computers and low level stuff”

If you like DSA and are familiar with them in Python, a good start might be trying to implement them in C. Implementing DSA in C requires an understanding of stack and heap memory. When I first started out I used this course on pointers: [video and this on DSA which has C implementations: [video Then you can try and do various tasks around your operating system with C. You can try and use man pages for this purpose.

On “How do I get the access the last element in an array in C? I'm trying to print 'and' at the end of a sentence in a for loop and think I need to write an if statement but I don't know how to access the last element / write the code. Please and explain, absolute beginner here.”

I don't know but here is a 4 hour video that I watched and still don't know, but yeah it points to an address that stores the value of your variable unless it's a pointer to a pointer which stores the address of the other pointer :) link to this video

Can anyone help me with pointers? I'm watching freeCodeCamp's "Pointers in C / C++ [Full Course" video](link to this video On 1:48:56, he said that `print *B`, `print B0`, and `print &B00` are the same. These three will print the address `400`. But isn't `*B` and `B0` for the value of the variable and not the address? I also don't get 1:50:34. How is `*(B+1)` `412` and not `4`? Doesn't the `*` mean the value of the variable? Can anyone dumb it down for me? I'm really struggling with understanding pointers.
