A demonstration of an impostor rendering system that dynamically generates billboards to reduce vertex and draw call overhead.

The video shows the Impostor Rendering System of the Dark Ride Studios engine. The left side of the frame shows the final frame while the right side highlights the impostors. The impostors are generated on the fly taking into account the environmental conditions (shadowing. The performance is dramatically increased in scenes that are vertex or DIP bound.

What people say. Cited as a classic demonstration of the impostor rendering technique for distant objects.

On “Would this work for rendering of distant objects?”

Is a well known technique called impostor rendering. link to this video http://graphics.cs.yale.edu/site/sites/files/EG99-Decoret.pdf the idea of an impostor is that you render a billboard object instead of the actual object. If you bake the normal and some material properties you can also have the impostor respond to dynamic lighting.
