Mr. Squishy explains how he spent twenty-one months building a fully playable replica of Pokémon Red inside Minecraft using command blocks.

Charlie Hall recently sat down with "Mr. Squishy," the man who spent 21 months creating a fully playable version of Pokémon Red inside of Minecraft. Watch as he explains how he did it, and what inspired him to take this on. What people say. Engineers highlight this project as an impressive feat of visual programming and constraint-based game recreation.

There's CSS-FPS, a full 3D scene that you can walk around in that's rendered using nothing but HTML and CSS. The movement logic is still JavaScript, but all it does to update the render is change the CSS on two root elements. Everything else is just hundreds of static HTML elements, each scaled and rotated using CSS. There's also the guy who made a full replica of Pokémon Red in Minecraft, even recreating some of the more popular bugs, using hundreds of thousands of command blocks and a custom texture pack. Every sprite on the screen is a retextured item carried by an invisible armor stand. Super impressive.

Visual Landmarks? This guy coded Pokemon Red into Minecraft, and where that link starts the video, he shows how he used a color encoding of blocks to help him keep track of what's where. I've actually been wanting that for a while in emacs. If random shapes were subtly drawn in the background and tracked with the document, that could really help me jump around code faster. It's like when you're driving, and maybe you can't explain the directions, but you've totally got an intuition for the landmarks. I assume I'd need a creative algo to generate backgrounds, but can emacs even have bitmap backgrounds that track with the scroll level?

There's a video on YouTube of a guy who made a clone of a Pokémon game in minecraft. He gives another guy a tour of it. He doesn't go into great detail about it but it was enough to satisfy my curiosity. link to this video
