Most embedded devices have ways to make it difficult for you to access the binary. This guy is great at explaning all steps it took for him to reverse engineer and crack the cable-tv receiver in states. This is the deep end but I think it gives a great overview. link to this video It's both very interesting and informative as it contains sw and hw tools
