HardwareElectronicsFPGAs and digital design

An introductory lesson on basic logic gates as part of a digital design course using FPGAs and VHDL.

This tutorial on Basic Logic Gates accompanies the book Digital Design Using Digilent FPGA Boards - VHDL / Active-HDL Edition which contains over 75 examples that show you how to design digital circuits using VHDL, simulate them using the Aldec Active-HDL simulator, and synthesize the designs to a Xilinx FPGA. Visit www.lbebooks.com for more information or to purchase this inexpensive, informative, award winning book.

On “Exercises for Basys 2?”

Hi there Frans-Willem, I found an awesome tutorial on Youtube (I think 100+ videos) a while back and it really helped me learn the basics of using an FPGA. I'm quite sure it is tailored to your exact board. The URL is: link to this video I hope this helps you out! EDIT: This is for the Basys/Nexys boards. The port map statement (which you will learn later on) is what determines your outputs to switches/LEDs/etc. Your switches/LEDs/etc. connection ports can be found in your user manual. I believe you can also use the Xilinx IDE to set them up within the program itself (I can do it in Altera, I'm sure it is similar). If you need help, let me know.

On “Resources for learning VHDL if I know Verilog?”

When I taught the VHDL, I used the following materials which provide many good examples. If you don't have the book, you can refer to the following youtube training videos. I think those VHDL examples are a good jump start for you. Hope it helps. [video http://www.lbebooks.com/

On “Have you read this book before?”

The book.pdf) has its flaws ;-). https://insights.sigasi.com/opinion/jan/pitfalls-for-circuit-girls/ **My recommendation** I suggest getting David Harris and Sarah Harris digital design book. (It does VHDL/SV side by side.) The latest edition targets creation of a RISC-V processor. Previous version covered the DLX processor originally from the H&P CA book. https://www.amazon.com/Digital-Design-Computer-Architecture-RISC-V/dp/0128200642 https://pages.hmc.edu/harris/class/e85/ Youtube Video Playlists on VHDL [video [video
