An introductory explanation of path tracing, showing how simulating light rays bouncing through a virtual scene creates realistic animated images.
Path tracing is a method for generating digital images by simulating how light would interact with objects in a virtual world. The path of light is traced by shooting rays (line segments) into the scene and tracking them as they bounce between objects. Path tracing gets its name from calculating the full path of light from a light source to the camera. Light can potentially bounce between many objects inside the virtual scene. As a ray of light hits a surface, it bounces and creates new rays of light. A path can therefore consist of a number of rays. By collecting all of the rays along a path together, the contributions of a light source and the surfaces along the path can be calculated. These calculations are used to produce a final image. Why it's here

On “Breakdown of a Simple Ray Tracer”
This is a really cool demonstration, love the code breakdowns. For a less technical, but broader scale description of ray tracing, Disney made an excellent video describing their use of ray tracing in movies. Check it out here: link to this video

On “Accelerated “Ray Tracing in One Weekend” in CUDA”
As the topic is about Ray Tracing in One Weekend and the book admits it's "technically a path tracer" here's a great Disney video introducing path tracing: link to this video

On “Pixar's Render Farm”
Here's a kind of silly but accurate view of path tracing for animated features link to this video Typically, most pathtracers use a technique called Monte Carlo Estimation, which means that they continuously loop over every pixel in an image, and average together the incoming light from randomly traced light paths. To calculate motion blur, they typically sample the scene at least twice (once at camera shutter open, and again at shutter close). Adaptive sampling rendering techniques will typically converge faster when there is less motion blur. One of the biggest time-saving techniques lately, is machine learning powered image denoising 1. This allows the renderer to compute significantly fewer sampl…
