Michael C. Lehn demonstrates a simple computer architecture realized on a Lattice iCE40UP5k FPGA using SystemVerilog.

- Lecture notes: github.com/michael-lehn/not-abc Some simple computer realized on an FPGA (Lattice iCE40UP5k FPGA). The pure intend is to provide some additional target for the compiler project in HPC0. You can find the SystemVerilog code used for this demo here: github.com/michael-lehn/ulm-on-ice

What people say. Recommended as a hands-on example of building a computer on an FPGA.

Building your own computer with an FPGA I believe for learning (or teaching) how to program it is helpful to have a bit of an understanding how a computer works. What I don't like are slides/talks where this is simply described in an abstract manner. I prefer some hands-on introduction. That's why I like the Ben Eater approach where you actually build your own computer with circuits that you can touch. I love this bottom-up approach. But a bottom-up approach usually just works if you have an idea to where the journey goes. You need some vision about the "top" which should be not too much above the bottom but far enough. And I think an FPGA can be useful here. I used a Lattice ice40 FPGA (…
