BobbyBroccoli explores the history of the famous Lenna test image from Playboy and why academic journals have banned its use.

The most widely-used image in academic history is no longer accepted in journals. So what happened? Here's a pretty good youtube documentary about Lena: link to this video Overall, I think it's a good move. There's other pictures that do Lena's supposed job better, without the added side-dish of creepy.

On “The most famous picture used as a standard in computer science is nudes from Playboy!”

See this video (The image you can't submit to journals anymore) for a comprehensive overview, and why "seems like it's getting upset over nothing" is a take that causes communications to break down. The image triggers harassments and isn't worth the limited amount of lolz. Absent a magical fix to harassments, it is beneficial to consider it inappropriate and stop using it.

See Bobby Broccoli’s **excellent** video for a detailed explanation of why most journals dont’t like it or outright forbid it’s use now (it’s more complex than you’d think) : link to this video

The 2nd image almost certainly got its inspiration from Lenna, who has not seen the BobbyBroccoli video, but i will say it was not my intention. The screenshot in question came from the Graphics Programming discord. I am sure you are a member there, you can find it in the "Film simulation - tinyfilm" community project made by me on the 27.05.2025 02:41. I will also say i have not thought a lot about the deeper implications / reinforcing action this has. Though i imagine it is a lot easier to not think about it when you did not have any negative experiences. My main goal was to make fun of myself really. And i wont stand here saying there is any technical reason to include such a photo. I…
