Dima explains the algorithms behind shadow mapping, percentage closer filtering, cascaded shadow maps, and variance shadow maps.

In this video I explain a lot of topics related to shadows and shadow mapping in games. They are: basic shadow mapping, percentage closer filtering (PCF), cascaded shadow mapping (CSM), variance shadow mapping (VSM). I provide intuitive examples to help you understand underlying algorithms better. I hope you'll enjoy! My name is Dima and I'm an Indie Game Developer. I started to code and create games in 2013. I have a huge experience in GameDev, such as 3D modeling, animation, programming, game design. I create these videos to help you know more about creating games and to show that we can create a lot of beautiful things with coding. Thank you!

What people say. Recommended as a clear explanation of shadow mapping techniques, particularly variance shadow maps.

Try Variance Shadow Mapping technique Hi, A few weeks ago I started implementing cascade shadow mapping in my library(no CSM yet), and struggled with poor shadow quality. Then I found about variance shadow mapping technique from this article: https://developer.nvidia.com/gpugems/gpugems3/part-ii-light-and-shadows/chapter-8-summed-area-variance-shadow-maps, from this video: [video explained some differences. I still not sure I will stick with it (tweaking depth biases somehow make the picture quite decent as well), but I like the result, and wanted to share it here. Thanks! \#webgl #javascript #shadowmapping #terrain #openglobus
